J. Cole Introduction

One of my favorite artists, J. Cole performing on stage for his album Born Sinner.
J. Cole is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer known for his thoughtful lyrics, storytelling, and socially conscious themes. He first gained attention with his mixtapes in the late 2000s and rose to fame with his debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story in 2011. Since then, he’s released several critically acclaimed albums like 2014 Forest Hills Drive and KOD. J. Cole is also the founder of Dreamville Records, a label that supports a number of rising artists. He’s respected not just for his music, but for staying true to his values and often avoiding the spotlight.
One of his more classic albums is Born Sinner and explores very religious themes.

Born Sinner
Runaway (Click for a verse from one of my favorite tracks)
"When it's all said and done everybody dies
In this life ain't no happy endings
Only pure beginnings followed by years of sinning and fake repentance
The preacher say we were made in image of Lord
To which I replied: "Are you sure?"
Stepping Into The Scene
J. Cole had a rough start to his professional career. One of his greatest influences, Jay Z, owned a label called Roc Nation. This provided J. Cole an opportunity to make it big and have a larger platform to perform from. However, his story wasn’t picture perfect.

“I heard that Jay‑Z was recording the American Gangster album. That same night, I made two beats … I went to the studio where Jay‑Z was recording and I waited outside for three hours … I tried to hand it to Jay‑Z. He looked at it and said, ‘What is this? I don’t want that. Give it to one of those other guys.’ It was crushing. That was another moment. But I snapped back to reality. I knew after that, I had to go harder. That type of rejection fuels me. I believe that greatness is fueled by rejection.”
